The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE conducts research on the technology needed to supply energy efficiently and on an environmentally sound basis in industrialised, threshold and developing countries. To this purpose, the Institute develops systems, components, materials and processes in the areas of the thermal use of solar energy, solar building, solar cells, electrical power supplies, chemical energy conversion, energy storage and the rational use of energy.

The Institute's work ranges from fundamental scientific research relating to solar energy applications, through the development of production technology and prototypes, to the construction of demonstration systems. The Institute plans, advises and provides know-how and technical facilities as services.

Fraunhofer ISE has been certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 since March, 2001.

37.6% – European Record Efficiency for Solar Cells from Fraunhofer ISE

With an efficiency of 37.6%, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems convert sunlight into electrical energy, thus setting a new European record. The result was reached using so-called multi-junction solar cells made out of III-V semiconductors. Up to now such solar cells have been used primarily for space applications. The current developments of the Fraunhofer researchers facilitate the more cost-efficient use of these types of cells for terrestrial applications.

Fraunhofer ISE achieves 28.5% efficiency for PV Concentrator Modules

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE not only recently achieved the European record for multi-junction III-V semiconductor solar cells (see Press Release No. 19/08) but they also celebrated optimum values by their implementation in the concentrator photovoltaic technology. Thus, solar researchers could measure a module efficiency of 28.5% under actual conditions on location in Freiburg.
